I guess if you live in a area with poor water quality, it then would be necessary I really don't know if this filter is necessary. The price is a little high too.
I've only used my new coffee maker a couple of times--it seems to work well and makes a good cup of coffee using these filters.
This item is exactly like the one filter that came with the new coffee maker.
It does make a difference when I change the filter on the coffee pot in taste. I am never disappointed in this product.
